Zelle Scams: How They Work, Can You Get Your Money Back, and What to Do
Zelle payments are fast and usually final. Learn the most common Zelle scams (fake bank fraud alerts, Marketplace buyers, 'accidental' payments) and the exact steps to try to recover money.

Zelle moves money between US bank accounts in minutes, and once it's sent it usually can't be cancelled. That speed is why scammers love it.

The 4 most common Zelle scams
- Fake bank fraud alert. You get a text "from your bank" asking if you approved a payment. Reply "No" and someone calls, sounding like the fraud team, and tells you to "reverse" it by sending money to yourself — which actually goes to them.
- Marketplace buyer or seller. A seller wants Zelle up front for a car, puppy or rental, then disappears. Or a "buyer" claims they need you to upgrade to a "business account" first.
- "Accidental" payment. A stranger sends you money and asks you to send it back. The original payment was from a stolen account, so you end up owing the bank.
- Romance and job scams. A new partner or employer asks you to receive and forward money — making you a money mule.
Can you get your money back?
Call your bank as soon as you notice — use the number on your card. Tell them it was a scam and ask them to file a claim. Many large US banks reimburse people who were tricked by someone impersonating the bank or the government. Keep screenshots of every message.
How to protect yourself
- Only use Zelle with people you know and trust.
- Hang up on any "bank" caller and call the number on your card.
- Never send money to yourself to "protect" it.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get my money back from a Zelle scam?
Sometimes. Zelle payments are usually final, but report it to your bank immediately. Banks are more likely to reimburse when a scammer impersonated the bank or a government agency, and acting within hours matters.
Will my bank ever ask me to send money with Zelle?
No. A real bank fraud team will never ask you to send money to yourself, to a 'safe account', or to another person to stop fraud.
Someone sent me money by mistake on Zelle. Should I send it back?
Don't send it back yourself. This is a common setup where the original payment came from a stolen account. Contact your bank and let them reverse it.
